A drive for sustainability

I, like many others, see a green recovery as a key part of the sectors response to the impact of Covid-19. This, coupled with a growing awareness and demand for sustainability within our younger generations will drive consumer behaviour across all sectors. Within the housing sector, I see that our purchasers, whether that be private occupiers or Housing Associations and other institutions as investors and landlords, will demand what we currently view as extras to be provided as standard. As an electric car driver myself for the last 5 years, I welcome moves to make electric car chargers mandatory on all new build developments with a dedicated parking space and I think that will just be the start. The key priority is therefore responding to these drivers but doing so in a way that is clean, efficient and effective and that most importantly does not restrict the supply of new homes. Concerted effort is needed by the sector, its supply chain and government to support this transition with technologies that work and are affordable. Creating sustainable homes as part of sustainable communities is an important part of ensuring that the places that we build are spaces where people love to live and increasingly work now and in the future.
