EDGE COMPUTING: TAKING SECURITY TO THE EDGE
You can find IoT solutions in almost every aspect of manufacturing. Connected devices can play a pivotal role in generating actionable intelligence for industrial players, but devices left at network perimeters without security can pose a risk to full operations.
Edge computing is able to bring data analysis close to the source but also has a role to play in improving security. As edge computing is able to analyse information locally, sensitive information can be filtered at the source and only pertinent data is therefore transferred or moved to cloud systems, reducing the risk of exposure.
If used in tandem with IoT gateways which are able to blanket IoT devices with an additional layer of security no matter which wireless protocols are in use — such as Wi-Fi, LPWAN, or LoRa — the enterprise can extend security solution coverage beyond the perimeter of a core network.

“It’s a mistake to believe that all data analysis can or should be done in the cloud. In the Industrial IoT, much of the analysis needs to happen at the edge.”
