IoT 5.0 – getting ready for the next phase of IoT evolution

In 1Q 2020, Omdia and IoT World Today conducted an online survey of 170 industry leaders from both IoT technology providers and enterprise end customers. The results highlight these organizations’ IoT drivers, challenges, adoption trends, and technology preferences, as well as exploring their views on 5G and AI impact on the IoT ecosystem.

This report discusses the main survey findings and our recommendations for enterprises and industry players

Key findings from the survey include:

  • 5G and AI will be transformative for IoT: The most-valued 5G benefits for IoT are ability to support massive device deployment, to deliver ultra-low latency. The most-valued benefit of AI for IoT is increased business and operational agility.
  • Automotive and transport, energy and utilities, and manufacturing will benefit most from 5G and AI for IoT: These are the top industries respondents see being most impacted by 5G and AI-enabled IoT solutions by 2025.
  • Security is a priority for IoT deployment: Incorporating end-to-end security in IoT solutions roadmap or adoption plans is the main short-term strategic priority for nearly 2/3 of IoT providers, and nearly ½ of enterprise end users. 85% agree that security concerns will be a major barrier to IoT adoption.
  • Lack of IoT skills is the most significant barrier to growth: 49% of IoT providers see the enterprises’ lack of IoT skills as the greatest challenge to deploying or scaling IoT projects, while 59% of IoT end customers selected lack of internal IoT expertise as their main challenge.
  • Sustainability is increasingly on the radar as an IoT benefit: two-thirds of respondents (66%) say sustainability will be a top-3 driver for IoT innovation over the coming five years.
  • The most important boost needed to move IoT to the next phase is more real-life deployment and business case examples: 50% of respondents say these are what’s most needed to drive the IoT market forward. The need for clearer IoT business cases also comes up as one of the top 3 challenges for enterprises and providers.
